While the four plays are independent, they share a common theme: historical figures like Galileo in 'Lamp at Midnight', Joe Hill in 'The Man Who Never Died', John Brown in 'Harpers Ferry', and Joseph in 'Coat of Many Colors' were all put on trial for their beliefs, found guilty, and punished, only to be vindicated by later generations. What was once considered heresy became accepted truth over time. Unlike the first three plays, which focus on real historical events, 'Coat of Many Colors' is based on the legend of Joseph. The story follows Joseph, sold into slavery in Egypt, who rises to the position of Prime Minister. Many writers have explored this tale, but Stavis brings a unique perspective, using Joseph's journey to celebrate the genius of humanity. In the early days, humans created tools and altered their environment, yet often attributed these changes to magic or divine powers, denying their own capabilities. 'Coat of Many Colors' highlights Joseph’s struggle to prove that human genius comes from within, and that individuals must take responsibility for their world. Joseph’s transformation into a "social man" is portrayed with humor and irony, challenging the supernatural beliefs of those in power. The result is a thought-provoking tragicomedy that offers both wit and depth. About author, Barrie Stavis:Barrie Stavis (June 16, 1906 – February 2, 2007) was an American playwright. He wrote several plays about men struggling in the vortex of history. His subjects include scientist Galileo, abolitionist John Brown, and labor leader Joe Hill. His play, Lamp at Midnight, about Galileo's struggle with the Catholic Church to get his ideas accepted, was performed and televised on the Hallmark Hall of Fame in 1966. Melvyn Douglas starred as Galileo. Stavis's plays can be done on a clean, simple stage. They have been translated into 28 languages and have been produced in dozens of major theaters around the world and in numerous college theaters. Stavis was actively working until his death on February 2, 2007, at the age of 100. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc. The photos and text in this listing are copyrighted.
