IMO, the problem with these (and there are plenty on sale here for parts) is the tracking parts are not built for a "rough ride" or "the long haul" - as such, they need to be treated very gently. As you can see, there are no damages to the corners. And that's the best place to see if a square shaped electronics item has been dropped or abused. This one hasn't. I'd start by buying one in decent shape, like this one, then cleaning the inside components thoroughly. Especially the laser and its tracking/moving parts.
