This serial was Chapman's big break into a career in movies. Spy Smasher battles a Nazi villain known as the Mask (Hans Schumm) who heads a gang of saboteurs determined to spread destruction across America. In 1966, a television movie was released under the title Spy Smasher Returns, made from the original serial footage.
