Gesmas wanted to rob them, but Dismas felt there was something special about the young couple with the baby, and convinced the others to leave them alone. A different story has Dismas as an infant suffering from a skin disease, and his father, who was also a thief, saw something special in Mary and her Child when his band happened to meet them in Egypt, and told his wife to wash the infant in the bath water in which Christ was just bathed - and little Dismas was cured. Variations of the story have the father being St Dismas and the baby his son, but you get the idea - there was some brief encounter between Dismas and Jesus many years before the Crucifixion.
