On the oher side of the medal is our wonderful St Joseph. Comes on a 24" stainless steel chain which is continuous - meaning it has no clasp. You can slip it on and off over you head without worrying about a clasp coming undone. It fits over most size heads! St Dismas, the Good Thief who was promised Paradise by Our Lord as he suffered alongside Him on Calvary, is a worthy role model despite his law-breaking history, as his faith carried him to Glory despite his sins. He is the patron saint of reformed thieves, convicts, prisoners, and funeral directors.St Dismas often shares a medal with St Joseph, as on this medal, and there are some old legends that explain the connection. One tells of a time when Dismas was younger and a member of a gang of thieves including the "other thief", Gesmas, and they came upon the Holy Family on their way to Egypt. Gesmas wanted to rob them, but Dismas felt there was something special about the young couple with the baby and convinced the others to leave them alone. A different story has Dismas as an infant suffering from a skin disease, and his father, who was also a thief, saw something special in Mary and her Child when his band happened to meet them in Egypt, and told his wife to wash the infant in the bath water in which Christ was just bathed - and little Dismas was cured. Variations of the story have the father being St Dismas and the baby his son, but you get the idea - there was some brief encounter between Dismas and the Holy Family many years before the Crucifixion.
