Description: thanksforlooking@danmagpie'sstampsTHE 'BIBLE' FOR THE 1d RED KANGAROO: "1d RED KANGAROO AND MAP SERIES" BY DAVID ADAMS, BILL BELL & GREG POPE - 363 COLOUR PAGES OF EASY-TO-USE SPECIALIST REFERENCE FOR A FAR MORE IMMERSIVE DIVE INTO THE 'REDS' WATERMARK, PAPER, SHADES, PRINTINGS AND VOLUMES: The 1d Red was originally printed in a four-plate configuration, two upper and two lower, each of 120 clichés. These sheets of 480 stamps were cut vertically into sheets of 240 and issued to the post offices. They were found difficult to handle and were subsequently further cut horizontally and issued in sheets of 120. After November 1913 the 1d Red was printed in a two plate configuration of 240 stamps which were cut horizontally and issued in sheets of 120. FIRST WATERMARK: The ld Red was only printed on first watermark paper. The paper employed was imported ready gummed with white gum Arabic. It has a vertical weave so the stamps tend to curl from top to bottom. Thickness varies from .09 to .10mm. The official colour of the stamp was Red but the Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue lists four shades: Red, Pale-Red, Rose-Red and Deep Red [and now, the DIE II 'CHERRY RED ANILINE' and the DIE IIa 'DEEP RED ANILINE']. The PLATES are in the following die states:Die IPLATES A, B, C Die IIPLATES D, E, FDie IIAPLATES G, H, K Plates A, B, E, G, and K were Upper Plates without printer's monograms.Plates C, D, F, and H were Lower Plates with the printer's CA monogram under L57 and JBC monogram under R58. There is a sheet of 240 units in the Royal Collection with an inscription in the top margin: "This is the first sheet sold at the stamp sales counter, Sydney", dated 2 January 1913 and attested to by Mr Moreton, Stamp Clerk. This sheet is from Plates A and D. There is a further sheet of 240 units, also Plate A over D, in the Australian Post Office Archives. SUBSTITUTIONS: There are at the time of publication four known substitutions on the 1d Red Plates:EL25 first reported by Messrs Ash and Bolton in 1981;FL19 and FL20 first reported by the Messrs Adams and Pope in 2003; andGR55 first reported by Messrs Adams and Pope in 2004. UCVs: There are some 100 x UNLOCATED CONSTANT VARIETIES (UCV) listed after PLATES A to K. These are recognised as being found constantly on a PLATE (location yet unknown). Since the publication of the 'THE BOOK' in 2004, some of these have been 'positioned' (FOR EXAMPLE UCV96 (SCARCITY 10) IS NOW ACTUALLY GL4). Additionally there have been approx 30 NEW UCVs documented by DAVID ADAMS since 2004. I have this list from DAVID (with scans) to be shared separately. Die I stamps are known with watermark inverted, watermark sideways, double perforations, punctured Large and Small OS and offsets. There are Die I inter-sheet pairs from Plates B over C, and Die I/Die II inter-sheet pairs from Plates A over D.Die Il stamps occur with watermark inverted, watermark sideways, double perforations, punctured Large and Small OS, and offsets. A double print is recorded. There are a number of double prints in existence that are thought to be forgeries, refer to the "Freaks or Fakes" section of this book.
