Description: There is a building in upper Harlem on a shabby side street with several other buildings that resemble it in both appearance and condition. Only cold water runs through the pipes. There is no electricity in the apartments but the electricity in the hallway lamp fixtures is still on. Garbage and assorted debris are piled one or two feet high on the rooftops, and the trash has been there so long that plant life has generated. Aside from the rats, the lice, and a few privileged junkies, this building is inhabited by an exceptional group of teenagers. The group members, whose ages range from fourteen to twenty-two, have a sense of possession and pride about their apartments, which they call spots. The common bond of the children of Ham is probably the same one that unites most teenagers, the need for friendship and a sense of belonging.
