CD, their fourth and final album, a UK import released in 2003 by Siouxie’s own Sioux label. This is a very rare version that includes a bonus CD featuring an instrumental version of the entire album. (Most copies came with a DVD.) Following a very successful string of hits with their regular group, Siouxsie Sioux and Banshee drummer Budgie formed the Creatures as a stimulating diversion in 1981. The idea was to strip their sound to its bare bones and make music as a voice/percussion duo, integrating the exotic rhythms and textures of world musics in the process. Too often such projects founder hopelessly under the weight of their arty pretensions, but the Creatures hit on a formula that turned out to be pure listening delight. Budgie proves himself to be a percussive powerhouse, exploring a panoply of rhythms with precision and skill. Siouxsie turned in some of her all-time finest vocal work for the occasion… and penned some deliciously evocative lyrics to grace Budgie’s beats. The Creatures cut an album and a couple of singles before returning, refreshed, to the Banshees, but Siouxsie and Budgie would revive the duo concept every few years until their divorce put an end to things. For Hai! they took themselves to Tokyo, then arranged a session with Taiko drumming master Leonard Eto, who turns out to be the perfect foil for Budgie, triggering off a wall of twisted percussive turbulence within which Sioux's vocal can do just what it likes. She is impossibly sensual on “Tourniquet,” while the stripped-down “Further Nearer,” manages to out-Björk Björk. Working with Eto has similarly inspired Budgie to stretch himself, layering marimbas and crashing gongs aplenty. It’s a veritable orgy of rhythm, so much so that the instrumental disc works quite nicely on its own as a listening experience. Serious fans will definitely want both.
