After all, it's one of only two such films currently playing in theaters. And given that the only other one is the snore-inducing, three-hour-plus epic "Gods and Generals," it's not exactly a heated competition. Besides, this supposedly family-friendly drama (which contains some surprisingly intense scenes of warfare) tries too hard to say something profound, when it should be concentrating on character development and plot coherence. The story is told through extended flashbacks, all of them from the point of view of Gen. J.T. Boone (veteran character actor Pat Hingle), who reminisces about his Civil War experiences. The boastful veteran remembers how, as a youth (Cody Newton) growing up in Kentucky, he wanted more than anything to join the Union Army so much that he ran away from home to do so. Instead, he found himself stealing food to survive, stowing aboard a steamboat and falling into company with Reginald Deets (Clay Watkins), a charismatic con man with a penchant for disguise. And thanks to Deets, he also found himself in the Confederate Army during the Battle of Shiloh which also afforded him an opportunity to meet up with some old friends from Kentucky who were fighting on the opposite side! Admittedly, the plot is fairly predictable and seems like a bit of a stretch. But it should be noted that at least some of it is drawn from the real-life experiences of three different Civil War veterans. Unfortunately, writer-director Dorian Walker ("Making the Grade") uses that material as a launching pad for some pretty contrived and ludicrous situations, particularly the obligatory romantic subplot, between the young Johnny and a Southern belle (Cristina Kernan). The performances are extremely inconsistent at best. Newton (last seen in the made-for-TV movie "The Runaway") does far too much mugging for his own good, while the hammy Watkins seems to think he's the star of the show. Still, it is nice to see Hingle again, even if it is in service of such a creaky tale.We do not sell copies, bootleg, or DVD-R. Item was circulated in Greece.
