The first of three slightly different issues of this note, it is dated August 12, 1914 and was issued in 1914 while “The Guns of August” were just beginning to plunge the world into the horrors of World War I. All three types of this note are dated August 12, 1914. This the first type, was issued in 1914. The second type has a distinct light brown pattern printed over both sides of the note and was issued in 1917. The third type was issued in 1920 and has blue serial numbers and seal. Austria had declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. In accordance with its treaty with Austria, Germany, on August 1, declared war on Serbia’s ally, Russia. It ignored Russia however and moved first against France – declaring war on August 3 and sending its main armies through Belgium to capture Paris from the north. The German invasion of Belgium caused Britain to declare war on Germany on August 4. Most of the main parties were now at war.
