Description: Thunderbird Speedway, Crandell TX Vintage Unisex T-Shirt THUNDERBIRD SPEEDWAY CRANDELL TEXAS Opened in 1959 by former racer J.T. Shacklett, the 1/4-mile dirt track was in a prime position by the city of Dallas. Originally racing consisted mostly of stock car racing and it didn’t take too long until it became very successful and even one of Texas most popular tracks. All the major drivers came through the gates and by the late 70s and the early 80s, the schedule had added modifieds, Sprint Cars and late models. At one point, this track was known as Texas longest continuously operated track. The track was a family run track and unfortunately at one point one of the owners passed away and from this point, ownership changed many hands. The track from the point continued to struggle. Along with ownership issues, the council was receiving constant noise complaints until the track was forced to close.
