Description: VERY RARE Antique Victorian Coin Silver Floral Christening Cup Mid 1800's This is a very beautiful piece and was a wonderful Christening gift for Thomas, and intricately crafted with beautifully detailed flowers. Just short of 3 1/2 inches in height, it has a diameter of 3 1/4 inches at the top, and weighs 154.3 grams. Considering its age, there is the appropriate amount of wear and patina on this cup. Please feel free to ask any questions or request additional pictures (although I cannot imagine any more ACCURATE information could be obtained other than what is listed). Check out this one by the same company, but a few years later while working for Tiffany & Co... https://collections.telfair.org/objects/52/christening-cup 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEED SHIPS THE NEXT DAY VIA USPS From my favorite expert at Justanswer - "AntiqueKerrie": Silversmith Robert Rait was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1807, and was listed as a Jeweler, Silversmith, and Retailer in New York City from 1833 until 1866. He passed away in 1869. His brother appears to have been David Crichton Rait, a well-known silversmith in Scotland. This mark is interesting because the R. Rait is stamped over another mark. It is possible that he sold this piece, since he was a retailer, and another silversmith made this cup. Another source has this company active from 1803-1874, but his sons became part of the business around 1849, so that may be what they are referring to in the later dates. They also worked exclusively for Tiffany & Company after 1851. This piece is likely from the period that overlaps both Rait and Moore, from 1833-1845. In 1868 silver laws were passed requiring silver to be marked Sterling or 925, or Coin. Before that year it wasn't as regulated, and coin silver was often not marked as such. Coin silver is less pure than sterling, but can be up to 90 percent silver.
