The Modus was in fact intended to be used for working at a table (with a fixed or wheeled structure), for use in waiting rooms, canteens, auditoriums, or for working while listening, or taking notes on the writing tablet that could be inserted into the structure. For this reason, product research was conducted not so much to achieve the goal of a specific chair, but to obtain a real sequence, that is, a programmed union of various components that combine to form different solutions. The basic element of these multiple solutions is the shell, which has been designed both to be injection-molded and ready for assembly, or to be used as a support for a subsequent integral polyurethane foam. Ultimately, the injection molding technique was chosen with nylon as the base material. The reasons for this choice lie in the need to use a material that is pleasant to the touch and to the sight, which at the same time has technological characteristics that allow for a high-quality product. In fact, nylon combines a high mechanical resistance with a minimum degree of electrostaticity; it allows a wide choice of colours (six) which, something rare in plastic materials, have here an appearance of exceptional brilliance and a refined finish like that of enamel or porcelain. For the transparent shells, however, cellulose acetate was chosen. The supports required different solutions that were suitable to transform the shell into a chair with multiple features. The variants included several alternatives: fixed central base, swivel with wheels, legs that allowed stackability; seating arrangements on benches, insertion of a writing tablet. All solutions that, belonging to the same sequence, were coordinated, logical and correct in the design. Die-cast aluminium was used for the frames because this is a material that, while remaining clearly apparent, presents all the characteristics of industrial production absolutely analogous to those of the nylon frame: that is, the possibility of injection moulding with limited subsequent interventions and consequent ease of mass production. The connecting element between the body and the different basic types, with armrests and with a notepad is one and the same. It is designed in such a way as to contain all the possibilities required by the sequence. This element has a design with very marked mechanical characteristics and an execution precision with very low tolerances. Die-cast aluminium was also used here. The Modus is made up of a total of 65 different pieces, including ten die-cast and 19 injection-molded plastic parts. The important thing, however, is that when you see the assembled chair, whether it has a central base, four legs, with or without a tablet, the 65 pieces are forgotten and only a simple, logical and pleasant element remains”.
