Description: Woven shaman masks are created by the Ember people of Panam. They share similar cultural traditions and weaving artistry as their neighboring Wounaan tribe. Ember shamans (called jaiban) use figures and visages to be used in their healing and cleansing ceremonies. The masks and animal images are assembled around the hut where a curing ritual takes place. This hand woven mask is one of a kind, is tight and stitches are intact. The exterior has faded from being displayed for several decades; the inside of the mask shows the original bright colors. The left ear has been bent and some fibers inside the main shape partially broke in one place - see picture. The tight mesh type weaving inside the triangles is amazing and found primarily on older masks not made for souvenir purchases. The extended mouth of the mask is made of two parts to simulate an animal's mouth/snout and is open all the way back to the main mask portion.
