Description: Here is an amazing miniature portrait brooch/pendant. It is difficult to figure out when it was done; it is signed HIL and though there are examples of this artist's work on the internet, there is very little information. At first glance I assumed this was a print but with a loupe found it was tiny brushwork.Judging from the frame this could be very late Victorian up til the 50s or so. The subject appears to be a Merveilleuse, a fashionable style of women after the French Revolution which mimicked early Greek style in sheer, sometimes transparant, dresses and curled hair. Fascinating times, worth reading up on. This portrait may even be Napoleon's sister Pauline or stepdaughter Hortense. The frame is marked 800 silver on back. It is filigree around a glass cover over the portrait. It has a bale for use as a pendant and a pinback that is not antique but may have been added later.Overall this measures 1 5/8 by 1 3/8. Look over all pictures and feel free to ask questions!
